A degree and and a higher level of knowledge in your chosen career path can certainly help you move into a different job. But before you get there, you’ll need to go through the mechanics of finding an opening and being interviewed. Succeeding in this process is something that too many colleges just don’t do much to prep students for.
A good U.S. News Money piece points how that too many college career centers are staffed by junior people with little job experience outside college themselves. Additional criticisms are that they give outdated advice that doesn’t come from anyone who has ever actually hired an employee, that networking needs to be emphasized far more than it is and that interview skills are virtually never discussed.
Last but not least, students need to be pushed to start thinking more about their career choice at the start of their degree programs, not a month before graduation day.
