Comedy or tragedy? John of Vlogbrothers discusses whether or not a college degree is worth it. The numbers may not be scientific, but In between chuckles, there’s a certain undeniable truth to his observations on:
– Our “less subsidized” public university system (less subsidized than in other countries) where out of state residents can pay over $30,000. per year in tuition.
– $60,000. in student loans will ultimately cost you well over $80,000. ultimately.
– The “opportunity cost” of not working for four years is quite significant.
– If, as a degree holder, you make about $1.75 per hour more per hour than you would have with no degree, you would effectively pay off the $175,000. real cost of going to a private college.
– Good quality accredited colleges are “criminally overpriced” but “still worth it.”
– The narrator actually made more per hour working in a fast food restaurant, but preferred a lower paying job he got after graduation because he no longer had to clean bathrooms (a task described in graphic detail), a “quality of work” factor that favors getting a degree.
– Whether you study electrical engineering or poetry, college gives you perspective that’s tough to gain elsewhere.
Amusing, but it’s hard to deny a lot of the observations here.
